With the recent reinforcement of research directions and expansion of research platforms and
research activities, BIG now invites qualified candidates to apply for full-time professorship that
includes full professors and associate professors. High-quality applicants will be considered as “1
00-talents program” candidates with competitive startup package. Successful candidates must have Ph
.D. degree of related fields and excellent track records in research accomplishments.
The Institute’s major research focuses are genomics, bioinformatics, systems biology, as well as
other frontier research activities depending on large-scale research platforms and collaborative
efforts. The institute is also in the process of launching a translational research center where
research activities connecting basic genomic information (such as genome, transcriptome, and gene
variations) to applied biological research fields, including biomedical, agricultural, microbial,
oceanic, and alternative energy researches.
We have 10 openings for 2008 and a similar number of positions for 2009. The recruiting for
excellent candidates is not only fast-paced but also has no deadlines enforced. We also encourage
scientists who have novel ideas and strong career goals in the fields of genomics, bioinformatics

Position 1 (two positions): genomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics
Candidates should have experiences in generating and analyzing genomic, transcriptomic and
metabolomic data and will use large-scale biology and comparative genomics tools to study molecular
mechanisms of common diseases or basic biological questions related to other agronomically important
organisms or a group of organisms.
Position 2 (two positions): bioinformatics emphasizing data mining and managing
The candidates should focus his or her research on biological information database management, data
integration, and development of basic bioinformatic tools for genome sequences and transcriptional
network analyses.
Position 3 (two positions): systems biology
The development and application of statistical algorithms to infer networks in bacteria and
mammalian cells from a variety of data types, such as metabolic, protein interaction, and gene
regulatory networks.
Position 4 (two positions): bioinformatics emphasizing model and algorithms development
Candidates should be responsible for the development of mathematical models and methods for large-
scale gene expression data and genome information analyses. Their experiences include developing
analytical technique and approach, such as statistics, pattern recognition, hidden markov model, and
fractal dimension method, neural network, complexity analysis, and multi-sequences alignment.
Position 5 (one position): evolutionary genetics
Candidates should focus their research activities on theoretical and conceptual issues of
evolutionary biology and evolutionary genetics including the relationship between genotype and
phenotype and the role of constraints in evolution. Expertise in one or more of the following areas
is particularly relevant: Mathematical or computer modeling, statistics, developmental genetics, and
population/evolutionary genetics.
Position 6 (one position): association study
This project focuses on uncovering genes which underlie the cause of human complex diseases, such as
cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and Type 2 Diabetes. We are also interested in other human health-
related areas, such as pharmacogenomics and DNA-based diagnostics. Research based on the use of
biological models to demonstrate the cause of diseases or their application to agriculture is
welcomed. Candidates require a Ph.D. degree in genetics, molecular biology, medicine, biostatistics,
or related fields, plus at least 2 years of post-doctoral training. Strong candidates are expected
to demonstrate one’s interdisciplinary ability and analytical skills, such as experience in
epidemiological study, linkage mapping, association study, haplotype analysis, epistatic
interactions of putative disease loci or haplotypes, quantitative trait analysis, etc.

The Beijing Institute of Genomics (BIG) of Chinese Academy of Sciences was officially founded in
December 2003, which was morphed from its predecessor, Beijing Genomics Research Center, or Huada, a
not-for-profit research organization established in September 1999. BIG (and Huada in a historic
perspective) has made significant contributions to the fields of genomics and biotechnology in China
by its excellent scientific and technological innovations and achievements in the past eight years.
From the participation of the International Human Genome Project (HGP) to the independent completion
of indica rice genome sequence maps and from the silkworm genome project with domestic collaborators
to the effort in the national campaign against SARS, all these facts demonstrate that BIG has
established itself in the world scientific community. BIG has set its ambitious goals to become a
world leader in genomics and bioinformatics, to establish an advanced research base, and to train
scientific leaders and young talents.
