Department Manager Job Description
Reports to the Director of Corporate Research Center China (Beijing)
Responsible for Department Mission & Vision, implementation of strategy, responsible to develop
Competence Profile of the Department (in cooperation w/ the respective Program mangers and with Head
Director of CNCRC) regarding the mission
Ensure channelling information between Departments in CNCRC, between CRCs working on related topics,
Program Manger and BU Technology Managers (and Division Technology Managers) as well as local
Business Responsible partners in China
Ensure distribution, implementation, embracing and execution of all Guidelines relevant to
Department activities
Resources Management
Responsible for resource selection and allocation within the Department
Ensure the respective resources in cooperation Program Manger and local Management considering both
qualitative and quantitative requirements in line with specific role of Department (Lead role and
support role) based on strategy
Ensure the optimal flexibility of resources
Budgeting process
Prepare annual and multi-year Department budget in cooperation with Program Manager, BU Technology
Manager and CNCRC controller (with respect to both Money and Activity dimension)Execute the budget
in line with all Guidelines
Ensure that project costs are compensated by project deliveries (money wise) / Responsible for Cash
Flow of Department
Ensure early indications of deviations between budgeted (in general planned targets and actual) and
actual values
Methods and Tools
Ensure that state of the art Methods and Tools are used
Ensure training on Methods and Tools preferring locally available resources
Project execution
Ensure most economical local allocation and prioritization of resources (financial and human, timing
)
Ensure that the best available knowledge (other CRC partners, Universities) is used
Ensure that the adequate and efficient Methods and Tools are used
Ensure optimal planning, control and utilization of Local resources with special attention to Top
Priority Projects as defined by Program Manager and Head of CNCRC
Ensure that the local priorities do not prevail Global and strategic R&D tasks
Ensure On Time Delivery for allocated Workpackages in projects
Optimise Risk management
Knowledge and Information sharing
Ensure organisational and technical conditions for efficient X-Department, X-functional (local level
) communication
Ensure the right Information flow between CNCRC Department - M&S (MarCom) - Local BU organisation
and Program Managers
Manage the cooperation w/ local universities
Ensure the information flow from local market, fairs in China, competitor products
Support PMs in ensuring the timely information about IP issues (watch out activity) for the
respective Technology field

Introduction of ABB China Corporate Research Center
ABB has been a pioneer in the power and automation technologies industry for more than 100 years. It
is almost impossible to record the number of inventions and the 'number ones' ABB has brought into
this modern world.
To enhance ABB's market position in China as well as form a brain pool for engineering creativity,
ABB Corporate Research China was established in 2005, which provides high level research and
application oriented results for the ABB business and customers.
The mission of ABBs Chinese Research in a way is, that engineers try to make products simpler and
more robust with clever designs and new materials, more reliable and safer, where safe means
foolproof to avoid any of potential accidents, more intelligent to have plug and play solutions.
The overall target is to find solutions and new concepts to minimize electric energy losses from the
energy generation to the end user - where in Chinese dimensions a reduction of 3% energy losses may
be the equivalent of energy supplied to half a million households.
Further in the Power System and Product Research grid security concepts are studied to avoid fragile
topology in power supply systems in future with focus on the Mega City power feed-in. A topic on the
other side of the coin is the rural electrification for areas where renewables like wind-energy
become the dominant factor and especially in this topic strong cooperation with customers and
external research institutes is important. Through the cooperation both parties are able to learn
and gain profit out of it.
In general the Power Transmission and Distribution research activity covering the range from Power-
products up to complex systems gives strong value contribution not only to ABB, it creates value at
local customers and impacts the society, which became very dependent from uninterrupted power supply
, especially in Cities where more people live in one place than in e.g. Switzerland and Austria
together.
A second topic in ABBs Research field is Robotics, where we have even the ABB Robotics Headquarter
in Shanghai. In Robotics we are maybe an early bird in a country with low labor costs, but even in
such low cost environment Robots started to become a good and cost saving alternative for mass
production, especially on automotive industry. From production and sales support to Product
Development up to long term oriented Research, the Team in Shanghai has very close cooperation with
the R&D Centers in Sweden and Germany, as well as to local Universities.
A third pillar of Development work done in Chinese Research center is the Operational Development
activity, where highly experienced Industrial Managers are focused to improve the value chain and
production process with implementation of state of the art methods and customization of process
tools and methods – with 4 key words in their Agenda: safety – quality - speed and costs.
