GENERAL  FUNCTION

As  an  experienced  practitioner,  responsible  for  making  significant  creative  technical  contributions 
to  the  overall  research  objectives  of  the  Company  and  to  provide  guidance  to  less  experienced 
professionals  and  technicians.


REPRESENTATIVE  MAJOR  ACTIVITIES

1.  Working  in  conjunction  with  the  Group  Leader  or  Technical  Director,  plans  creative  research 
programs  and  individual  experiments  that  are  consistent  with  research  priorities  and  deal  with  the 
important  experimental  parameters  to  be  evaluated.  Also  performs  and  interprets  relevant 
experimentation  and  draws  appropriate  conclusions.  Presents  the  data  in  a  concise,  accurate  and 
usable  manner,  and  efficiently  utilizes  whatever  formal  methods  of  communication  necessary  to 
communicate  progress  to  Nalco  staff  and  research  personnel.

2.  Responsible  for  building  value  for  customers  through  the  development  and  deployment
of  innovative  products  and  services.  Interacts  directly  with  external  customers  to  understand  their 
processes  while  determining  their  immediate  and  long-term  needs.  Provides  direct  customer  support  on
an  ongoing  basis  to  solve  customer  problems  and  support  the  sales  process.

3.  Responsible  for  establishing  effective  working  relationships  with  various  disciplines  within  the 
Company  and/or  customers  that  have  interest  in  current  projects  and  experiments  and  keeping  the 
Group  Leader  or  Technical  Director  informed  on  pertinent  communications  and  developments.

4.  Based  on  conclusions  drawn  from  experimental  work,  recommends  products  and  procedures  to  be  field
tested  and  participates  in  field  trials  to  evaluate  the  product's  or  procedure's  performance.

5.  Where  needed,  follows  up  with  reports  or  additional  experimental  work,  and  follows  new  products 
through  initial  manufacturing  and  quality  control  inspection.

6.  Responsible  for  designing  creative  approaches  to  achieve  specific  goals  of  assigned  project. 
Provides  training  and  technical  direction  to  one  less  experienced  professional  or  technician.

7.  Responsible  for  assuring  all  research  activities  are  performed  in  a  manner  that  conforms  with 
existing  safety  and  regulatory  requirements  and  policies.

8.  As  an  experienced  professional,  is  expected  to  develop  in-depth  knowledge  of  a  particular  area  of
specialization  and  at  the  same  time,  keep  abreast  of  current  scientific  trends  and  developments.

9.  Supports  and  is  committed  to  Nalco's  Quality  Improvement  Process  and  the  guiding  principles  of 
Responsible  Care？,  and  its  six  Codes  of  Management  Practice.


*The  word  "Chemist"  should  be  changed  to  "Engineer",  "Metallurgist",  "Microbiologist",  or  "Ceramist"
when  appropriate.


POSITION  QUALIFICATIONS

Requires  Ph.D.  with  no  experience,  M.S.  with  at  least  3  years  experience,  or  B.S.  with  at  least  6 
years  experience.  Must  have  creative  scientific  problem  solving  ability  and  high  degree  of 
scientific  knowledge  in  area  of  specialization.  Must  be  able  to  manage  research  projects  and 
interact  effectively  with  internal  Nalco  functions  and  Nalco  customers.
